This Thursday, the mayor of the Pink City, Jean-Luc Moudenc took part in a marauding. He put on the white vest of the volunteers of the association La Maraude des Anges.
The last drops of the downpour have just fallen. The bitumen is wet. Dead leaves dress it. It is 12:30 p.m. this Thursday. In front of the statue of Jeanne D’arc, more than ten volunteers from the association La Maraude des Anges are present, as every day. They put on their white vests. Some are dragging shopping carts. The others are holding bags. The volunteers welcome a special guest for this marauding, the mayor of Toulouse, Jean-Luc Moudenc.
“It is an association that the town hall subsidizes. I relied on what I was told. It is time to go into the field to see, ”smiles the mayor of the Pink City. Daniel Rougé, the deputy mayor in charge of solidarity and inclusion, also walks alongside the volunteers. “Even if we are aware of the people who are on the street, it is important to see them and realize », He affirms.
Marc Perez, the president of the association, launches: “Ready? “. The volunteers split into two groups: one for food aid, the other for clothing. The mayor grabs a shopping cart. He will go with the food aid in the company of his assistant. A few meters after the start of the marauding, a homeless man is sitting on the sidewalk. Jean-Luc Moudenc observes the volunteers during the distribution of a food kit. “They are strong. Associations are weakened because their volunteers do not all respond present in these times of health crisis. The needs are increasing. With my presence, I hope to encourage Toulouse residents to register as volunteers ”.
“I made the right choice”
The group takes over the management of Jean-Jaures. In front of a store, two homeless people are waiting for the members of the association. “You think of us. You bring us meals and social ties, ”exclaims one of the two. After distributing meals, Jean-Luc Moudenc talks to the homeless about the accommodation available to them. “If we had any vacancies, we would make them available to you. The problem is the lack and I am the first to be disappointed, ”he says.
By crossing the various arteries that lead to the Capitol, dozens of homeless people are served. “Since the first confinement, there are more and more people on the streets. Some are not there and still need food aid, after paying the rent, they have nothing left. The crisis has weakened many people, ”says Jérémy, a volunteer. During the distribution, the mayor takes his role to heart and laughingly repeats “the sandwiches, it’s me” at each visit. Once on the Place du Capitole, at 2 p.m., the mayor returns his waistcoat and thanks the volunteers. “It confirmed to me that I made the right choice in supporting your association. I love your personalized relationships with each person on the street. I was able to see a reality, ”he slips before leaving.
The marauding continued for an hour. 80 food kits and many clothes were distributed. “We hope to do more. We lack the means. With the purchase of a truck and premises, we will be even more efficient, ”says the president of the association. Tonight they will walk the streets again.
